The SLPP would continue to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga said on Sunday (18) during a programme to commemorate his late father, Minister Reggie Ranatunga.
“It is obvious that the President has done a good job and that the Opposition wants to create animosity between the SLPP and Wickremesinghe,” he said.
Ranatunga said that the opposition political parties had been calling for an election, but the government had just begun to stabilise the economy, he said.
“Therefore, this is not the time for elections. We are also ready for any election. The SLPP can win any election. President Ranil Wickremesinghe will decide when to hold elections,” he added.
The Minister also insisted that the SLPP would not allow the implementation of any laws that would harm the people and urged people not to fall prey to Opposition propaganda.
“The Opposition says some laws presented by the government would destroy democracy and freedoms. This is not true,” the Minister claimed.
