The Catholic Church yesterday claimed that the invitation extended to Senior DIG Nilantha Jayawardena, who has faced accusations of failing to prevent the Easter Sunday attack, to speak at an awareness program for MPs on the Easter Sunday investigations, had a clear agenda.

Addressing a press conference, Media Spokesman for the Catholic Church Reverend Father Cyril Gamini Fernando said though Jayawardena was prevented from addressing the MPs, his inclusion in the session signifies a specific motive.

Fernando highlighted that the Presidential Commission tasked with investigating the attack had recommended filing a criminal case against Jayawardena. “Nevertheless no case has been filed against him as of now,” he pointed out.

Fernando outlined the numerous allegations against Jayawardena over the attack and recommendations put forth by various agencies regarding the actions to be taken against him. He expressed his view that it was paradoxical for Jayawardena to be invited to speak about the attack he has been accused of failing to prevent, given these circumstances.

He said that this action clearly indicates that the Government and the Minister of Public Security are attempting to conceal the truth surrounding the horrific terror incident.
